1- Consider the question of race in America after the conclusion of the Civil War. What efforts were made to grant equal civil and political rights to all Americans following the war? How did these efforts fare and what obstacles did they confront? How did the emergence of a Republican South, which allowed to freedom to participate equally in government and society, shape the reaction of the Democratic Party? What is the ultimate response of Southern Democratic to the efforts of Reconstruction?

2- Prior to the American Civil War, the Republican party emerged with a platform for American development that included far more issues than its free soil or anti-slavery extension plank. Consider the Republican party’s other issues and how they implemented their platform once they gained power in 1861. What was their overall agenda? What legislation did they pass to carry out their program for America’s economic development? Who did these economic programs benefit initially? In what ways did these same approaches in the Reconstruction South result in economic crisis following the Bank Panics of 1873? Finally, consider the overall impact of the Republican party’s economic platform through the end of Reconstruction.

3- The Fourteenth Amendment established the concept of birth citizenship, but fairly quickly after its ratification African-American, Asian American, Native Americans, and Mexican-Americans found themselves either second-class citizens or denied citizenship completely. Consider the factors that were used to deny or limit non-white citizenship and the arguments made against these groups. Who fought back against these challenges? What were their arguments? Did they make any headway in the late 19th Century? Be sure to cite specific people, decisions, and acts.
