Producing Exercise
You are going to produce the first block of a newscast from the opening (or preshow tease) all the way through the first commercial break.
It must have at minimum of 5 stories
It must include at least one script for each of the following 5 story types: Copy, VO, SOT, VO/SOT, PKG.
Your total time must be between 7:30 – 9 minutes.
When timing out you scripts each line of anchor text is 2.5 seconds. (2 lines is = 5 seconds)
Be sure to add the package and SOT times to your Total Story Times.(upper right of each script) VO times are needed for the director but do NOT need to be calculated into the Total Story Time.
At least 3 of your stories must have a twitter message
The animated show open is 20 seconds long be sure to include that in your rundown
Include a preshow tease and a 1st break tease:
You will write scripts for each story, including a preshow tease and a (2 part) tease before commercial break (tease a sports story and a national story) that ends the A block.

About 1:30 this morning, a man entered the Tip Top Club on the square in Troy and started shooting. Three people were wounded, one seriously. They’re hospitalized in Troy. Police are seeking a white male about 6 feet tall who was wearing a YETI cap and between 20 and 28 years of age for questioning. Reporter Avery Slotnick has a 1:45 package.
You have a :25 sound bite from a Troy City Council member, Luke Barnfarther, who points out this is the third time this year police have been called to the Tip Top Club because of trouble at the bar (outcue: ‘another tragedy.”) Barnfarther would like to see the bar’s liquor license reviewed.
The Iota Sigma fraternity at Troy University held its annual Bowl-A-Thon for Tourette’sSyndrome yesterday. The event raised some $1,207.00 in donations. Steve Landecker is the frat’s VP for philanthropy. He spoke about the event for 20 seconds. The outcue for his sound bite is “for a worthy cause.”
The Pike County Sheriff held a press conference today. Assistant director of the Alabama Dept. of Homeland Security, Becky LaRoche and representatives of the county EmeragencyManagement Agency also attended. Sheriff Buck Murdock announced that a federal DHS grant in the amount of $58,000 will be used to equip the Sheriff’s Dept. and vehicles with new radios. You have VO of the presser, and a :22 sound bite from the sheriff, outcue “twenty-first century.”
Also this morning, Troy firefighters were called to put out a blaze at the Troy Duck Decoy manufacturing plant. When they arrived, the building was fully engulfed in flames. It took over an hour to extinguish the fire, and the warehouse and assembly plant were totally destroyed. The owners don’t know what they’ll do. The cause of the fire is unknown. Reporter Ashlee Burnbottam has a 1:30 package.
You also have stories available about the presidential campaign, a new model of I-pad that will be available just in time for Christmas, and a student who is walking the Appalachian Trail to raise awareness for bald children.
Omega Omega Sorority is collecting shoes to send to children who live in Brazil. Two of the sisters met members of a tribe of indigenous people who had never seen shoes and were fascinated by them during a mission trip last spring. They are collecting all kinds of shoes, both new and used. Cindy Bodicker, who is heading the drive for OO, gave a :17 sound bite that ended with “smiles on their faces.” OO has a table set up in the Trojan Center Food Court where students and others can bring shoes.
The Johnson Center for Fine Arts is a museum in Troy. It is open Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 to 3. There is a new exhibit at the Johnson Center for Fine Arts in downtown Troy. It features various art forms in various media by artists who are vetrerans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The art works depict the vets experiences in the wars. Reporter Christian Windall has provided a 1:25 package on the exhibit, which runs through the Tuesday after Veterans Day.
Six abandoned houses have burned in Pike County during 2012. Arson is suspected in all cases. You have VO video of all. This morning, the Pike County Sheriff’s office announced that it has arrested Wayne Rucks and charged him with at least two of the arsons. Rucks is 26 years old and is a member of the Goshen Volunteer Fire Dept. Investigators for the Sheriff’s office say an anonymous tip left on the Secret Witness line answering machine led to the arrest. Rucks is in custody and is being questioned about the other fires. Sheriff Buck Murdock says there may be additional arrests.
Members of a Troy Church are upset. The Everlasting Life Church has been meeting for the last three years in part of the old Wal-Mart on 231. Pastor Mike Hudsucker and his wife and co-pastor Joann have been leading a fund raising campaign for most of that time to build a new worship house on property donated by a church member on the Elba Highway. After Labor Day services, the Hudsuckers left on a revival tour of Florida in hopes of raising more funds. They were due back for Sunday Services on Oct. 7. They have not been seen. Bart Murphy, a member of the church board, says more than $100,000 is missing from the building account at Troy Bank and Trust. Church members have asked the district attorney to look into this matter. Reporter Shaliba Hitler has a 1:40 package on this event.
Vernon Wormer, EdD., as been assistant dean of students at Troy since 2004. The Georgia board of Regents announced today that Wormer has been selected from among 12 applicants to take over leadership of that state’s junior college system. Wormer will continue at Troy until the Christmas break, and will start his new job in Georgia on January 4. You have VO video of Wormer
Students from Pike County Middle School had a field trip to the Pike Pioneer Museum today. There, they learned from museum volunteers how early settlers in Alabama lived. Volunteers demonstrated how they cooked, hunted, and made soap. Reporter Vonda Sixkiller has a 1:40 news package
A delivery truck operated by King Beverage Co. of Brundidge overturned this morning at the intersection of U.S. 231 and South Brundidge Street. This is the busiest intersection in Troy. Over 500 cases of Budweiser, Bud Light, Michelob Ultra and Bud Light Lime tumbled out and were sprayed across 3 lanes of the intersection. Traffic was obstructed for more than an hour. Most of the bottles were shattered, but cans largely survived the accident. To add to the confusion and disruption of traffic, many cars were stopped in the intersection and nearby, as their drivers and passengers got out and grabbed what they considered to be ‘free beer.’ Two stopped cars were hit during this before police arrived in sufficient numbers to restore order. Police and paramedics were called to the Colley Senior Complex today when two women in their 80s got into an altercation over an 82 year old man during the regular weekly bingo tournament. No one was arrested, but both of the women were treated at the scene for contusions. The women were both transported to Troy Mercy Hospital for further treatment and observation. The assistant director of the Complex said in a :22 sound bite that she had “never seen anything like it.” (outcue) You also have VO of the exterior of the complex.
Police were called to a home in southwest Troy at 3:30 this afternoon. Entering the open front door, they found a couple dead from apparent gunshot wounds. Police have not yet revealed the names of the man and woman whose bodies were found. Police are also not saying who called or what prompted the call, nor have they confirmed if the bodies are those of the couple known to live at that address. You have VO video of the scene.
Power was out for about two hours this morning in downtown Troy. A pickup truck crashed into the electric substation on Victory Street and damaged equipment there. The accident happened about 7:15 this morning. Police say the driver, a 62-year old farmer, apparently fell asleep, missed a turn, and crashed through the fence at the substation. You have a :27 second sound bite for a city electrical worker who talked about the danger of extricating the otherwise uninjured driver from the truck, which was covered with high voltage powerlines. Outcue: “dangerous situation.” You also have VO video of the truck, as it sits imbedded in the substation.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley says he will veto any state budget that includes the “draconian” cuts that would be required without tax increases. In a speech today, Bentley continued to press for public support for his $541 million tax proposal for lawmakers. He says the need is actually much higher.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A Birmingham man has been sentenced to serve life in prison after he was convicted in the 2012 killings of five men found dead in a home. A judge sentenced 20-year-old Rashad Stoves yesterday to serve six life sentences. He was charged with one count of capital murder for each man killed and a sixth count for a multiple slaying.
FYFFE, Ala. (AP) — Forecasters have confirmed a second tornado spawned by storms that hit north Alabama last week. The National Weather Service office in Huntsville conducted a field survey this week and determined a weak EF-0 tornado touched down briefly on April 3 near Fyffe in DeKalb County.
DANVILLE, Ala. (AP) — State troopers in Alabama say an 18-wheeler truck hauling a load of chickens overturned near Danville. Troopers say the wreck happened just after 4 o’clock this morning.
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Jurors are in their second day of deliberations in the trial of an Alabama police officer accused of using excessive force against a grandfather from India. The panel returned to federal court in Huntsville to consider a civil rights charge against Madison Police officer Eric Parker. The judge earlier agreed to the jury’s request to see a police video of Parker’s encounter with 58-year-old Sureshbhai Patel (suh-REHSH’-by pah-TEL’).
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Former Congressman Artur Davis has asked a judge to require the Alabama Democratic Party to accept his paperwork to run for Montgomery County Commission. Davis last week filed a motion seeking a temporary restraining order.
HEADLAND, Ala. (AP) — Storms dropped more than 5 inches of rain in parts of Alabama and damaged a school in Headland, prompting officials to cancel classes. Henry County Superintendent Lesa Knowles says high winds passed through the area early Sunday, peeling the roof from the Headland High School Auditorium.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Gov. John Kasich is making a campaign stop in Alabama. The Ohio governor will hold a campaign rally tomorrow at Wintzell’s Oyster House in downtown Mobile. Kasich visited Alabama in August. During that stop, Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley endorsed Kasich for president.
