Hotel Features Discussion

For this project, you will select 5 different hotel types or classifications as listed below. You will better be able to find the five (5) hotel classifications or types (see Chapter 1) if you select a larger city as your destination. You may also select multiple destinations. Keep in mind that a luxury hotel will have a 4- or 5-star rating. The mid-range hotel will have 3-star rating while the limited/economy hotel will have 1-2 stars. Ratings will vary for the resort and residential hotels.

  1. Luxury hotel
  2. Resort hotel
  3. Residential hotel (equipped for extended stays)
  4. Mid-range hotel
  5. Limited/economy hotel

If you need help thinking of hotels, think of your large chain hotels (see Chapter 2) or go to an online travel agency (OTA), such as Hotels.com, Expedia, or Priceline to get ideas of what hotels are located at your destination and the star rating of each hotel. The star ratings you see are based on customer reviews that are fine to use for this project. Go directly to the hotel site and select dates within this class term. You will then identify two rate types (advance purchase, discount rates, or loyalty club rates for example). Next, go to an OTA. For example, if you want the Waldorf Astoria in New York, you may not find this hotel available on Priceline or Hotels.com so you cannot use this hotel. Keep in mind many OTA’s will not sell the top-of-the-line rooms such as a presidential suite, so look for standard rooms. The following is the information that you will need to put in your paper, PowerPoint, Prezi, or brochure.

  1. You will need to select two (2) hotels for each classification to compare. Each classification needs to be from the same city. You may select different cities for each classification.
  2. Include the name of each property, the location, and the star rating as shown on the discount site.
  3. Write a paragraph about the hotel amenities. You will notice that as you move from luxury to economy, your paragraph will get smaller and smaller. Amenities contribute to the ratings and the price.
  4. What is the standard rate listed for the OTA website?
  5. What is the standard rate listed for the same type room on the hotel website?
  6. What are the discounted rates (what are the discounts) on the OTA website if available?
  7. What are the discounted rates (what are the discount) on the hotel website?
  8. Did you have more room and rate options on the OTA or the hotel website?
  9. Was it more cost effective to use the hotel website directly or the discount site for each classification?
  10. Which site(s) do you prefer when booking rooms?
  11. Was one site easier to navigate than the other.

If you would like to make a PowerPoint you will make your introduction slide with your name and class term. Each slide should represent one of the five (5) classifications. Your final slide or page should answer questions 10 and 11.
